Cash, Credit, or Gift: Picking the Right Referral Reward

ReferSales Team · · 3 min read

Most Singapore SMEs launch their referral program with a cash reward because it feels like the safest default. It's simple, it's universal, and nobody has to think too hard about it.

But cash is not always the best motivator. In fact, for many businesses it quietly underperforms store credit or a well-chosen gift, and most owners never find out because they never tested the alternative.

Why Cash Feels Safe But Isn't Always Best

Cash is transactional. The moment someone receives it, the mental link between your brand and the reward disappears. It goes into a bank account and blends in with everything else.

There's also a psychological cost. Some customers feel awkward being "paid" to recommend a friend, especially in tight-knit Singapore circles like condo chat groups or parent networks. It can feel like they're profiting off a relationship.

Cash also has a ceiling problem. A $20 cash reward feels small next to a $500 purchase. But $20 in store credit, or a $50 credit that requires a $30 top-up, can feel like a genuine gift rather than a fee.

When Store Credit Wins

Store credit works best when you have healthy margins and customers who are likely to return. A clinic, salon, tuition centre, or F&B business all fit this pattern well.

Credit keeps the reward inside your ecosystem. The promoter comes back, spends again, and you get a second sale on top of the referral itself.

  • Higher perceived value: $50 credit can be pitched against a $50 retail price, while $50 cash just feels like $50.
  • Built-in retention: the promoter has a reason to return within a set window.
  • Lower actual cost: your cost of goods is lower than the credit's face value.

The tradeoff is that credit only works if the promoter is already a customer, or is willing to become one. It won't motivate someone who has no interest in your product themselves.

When a Gift Beats Both

A physical or curated gift works when you want the reward to be visible and talkable. A nice hamper, a branded item, or a small experience gets shown off, photographed, and mentioned to other people.

This matters because the gift itself becomes a second referral trigger. Cash sitting in a bank account generates zero conversation. A thoughtful gift on a table does.

Gifts work particularly well for insurance agents, property agents, and coaches, where the relationship is more personal and a cash reward can feel transactional or even inappropriate given the size of the deal.

A Quick Way to Decide

  • If your business has strong repeat-purchase behaviour, lean toward store credit.
  • If your product is high-ticket or relationship-driven, lean toward a curated gift.
  • If your promoters are mostly one-time customers with no reason to return, cash is still the practical choice.

You don't have to pick just one. Many Singapore SMEs offer a choice: cash or double the value in store credit. This lets each promoter self-select based on what they actually want, and most people take the credit when it's framed as "worth more."

Test It Instead of Guessing

The mistake isn't choosing cash. It's choosing cash and never testing anything else. Run two versions of your referral offer for a month, cash for one group and credit or a gift for another, and compare which one actually drives more completed referrals, not just clicks or shares.

Small businesses rarely have the bandwidth to run this kind of test manually. But even a rough version, alternating offers by week, gives you a real signal instead of a guess.

The reward type is one of the few referral program variables you can change without touching your product, pricing, or brand. It's worth getting right.
